Yikes! How long between posts?

Man alive I am so busy. Art direction for Cubicle 7 continues apace, alongside all my regular freelance art duties.

Here's some recent work. A banner for Battle of Azuran:

  1. hi Jon,
thanks for your great ArtRage tutorials on youtube.

I just started using ArtRage Studio Pro (on 2007 imac with 4gb ram). In Photoshop I always work at A4 size at 300ppi and i noticed with AR a bit of slowness with palette knife/airbrush at 300ppi.
Is this pretty normal? I understand that AR doesn't have a scratch disk like Photoshop.
    cheers

  2. Hi Eddy! lad you're liking the Youtube stuff, I must find the time to do some more!

I did a quick test at that size, and didn't notice any signigicant slowdown. The airbrush in AR I generally find a lot slower than PS's but then it's doing a different thing.

In general I work 75% to 100% larger than that, and do get some slow down with large brushes. I'm using a dual core 3.06 GHz iMac (2009 I think), also with 4 gig of ram.

    Not sure if that helps.

  3. Thanks Jon, for your help.
Do you always work at 300ppi or greater in AR?
I don't print everything i create but its good to have that option. I am using an Imac late 2007, 2.4Ghz. I have heard of an artist that works in AR at 150ppi then bumps up the res to 300ppi in photoshop. His works appears on comic covers with no loss of detail or pixelation.
    cheers

  4. No probs - wish I knew more about the technicals - I tend to invest in the most ridiculously powerful machine my budget allows, and that seems to do it.

Hmm I'm very wary of bumping up, and it's not something I'd ever do if I can help it- but yeah I've heard of people doing it with apparent success.
